What does Lichen look like?
NZ Steel describes an earthy neutral with olive and khaki undertones. It sits somewhere between green and brown, which is why it blends into paddocks, bush edges and tussock.
You'll only find it in the Classic finish. And the name does cause confusion: choosing Lichen won't stop real lichen growing. That comes down to shade, moisture and upkeep.
Going on a farm shed or barn?
NZ Steel treats some buildings as special environments, including sheds for intensive animal farming. If that's the plan, ask the roofer to confirm the product and warranty with NZ Steel before anything is ordered.
The warranty also excludes damage from contact with soil, ash, fertiliser or saltwater. Keep fertiliser well away from the sheets and the spouting (gutters).
Heat and brightness
A TSR of 42% puts Lichen mid-range: Cloud reflects 69% of solar heat and Ebony 5%. Higher TSR means a cooler roof. Its LRV is 28%, so it looks muted from a distance without being dark.
What we'd choose
For a rural home or lifestyle block where the roof should fade into the land, Lichen is a strong candidate. We'd look at a sample outdoors against the paddock or bush behind the house, never just on a screen, which NZ Steel says won't match the real thing. We're not affiliated with NZ Steel in any way.
