COLORSTEEL colours

Gull GreyLight, breezy, and cooler than the charcoals.

Gull Grey is a light, breezy grey that NZ Steel says takes its cue from wet sand and weathered driftwood. With a TSR of 57%, it reflects more than twice the solar heat of Grey Friars. It suits coastal and contemporary homes in town, but at least one rural council lists it as too light for its landscapes.

We don't show this colour on screen because screens get it wrong. Ask a roofer or supplier for a sample sheet.

What does Gull Grey look like?

Think of sand just after a wave pulls back, or driftwood bleached by sun. Those are NZ Steel's own reference points, and they make it a natural match for beach houses and timber.

It's lighter than Sandstone Grey (LRV 27%) and darker than SandScape (66%). The only finish is Classic.

Heat and glare

TSR 57%, LRV 51%. That's a light roof by any measure, sending back a lot of solar heat and enough visible light to look bright on a clear day.

If neighbours look down on your roof, a light grey is a gentler compromise than white.

Rural zones: check before you choose

Queenstown Lakes District Council's rural colour guide names Gull Grey as one of the COLORSTEEL colours it considers inappropriate, next to Titania. Under its Proposed District Plan, roofs in the Rural Residential and Rural Lifestyle zones must have an LRV of 20% or less.

Other councils set their own rules, and consent-exempt work still has to comply with the district plan. A quick question to your council saves an expensive mistake.

Seeing Gull Grey properly

  • Order a sample: NZ Steel says screens show colour differently from the product.
  • View it outside on a bright day and an overcast one.
  • Hold it against your cladding, joinery and any stone.
  • Judge it from where you see the roof most, usually the street or the drive.
  • Ask the roofer for photos of Gull Grey roofs nearby.

What we'd do with Gull Grey

For a bach or modern coastal home in a town or suburb, we'd put Gull Grey high on the list for keeping the roof cool without white's glare. In a rural zone, we'd check the district plan first. Find My Roofer has no affiliation with NZ Steel.

Questions

Straight answers.

Can Gull Grey go right on the beachfront?
Yes, in ALTIMATE. NZ Steel doesn't recommend MAXAM in its Extremely Severe category, within 25 m of the high-water line on the east coast or 50 m on the west. Further back, MAXAM covers most coastal sites. Your roofer should confirm which applies.
What about geothermal areas?
Sulphur compounds there are corrosive, and NZ Steel asks anyone building in one to get product advice. Have the roofer confirm product and warranty with NZ Steel.
